What is a Green Meeting?
Green conventions or meetings are meeting related programs which are conducted in ways to minimize the environmental burdens imposed by such activities. Green meeting and event planners apply environmentally preferred or best “green“; practices to waste management, resource and energy use, travel and local transportation, food provision and disposal, site selections to include hotels and accommodations, and management and purchasing decisions.
So in other words....according to the Convention Industry Council, a green meeting or event incorporates environmental considerations to minimize its negative impact on the environment.
  •                                               Why Go Green?

There are two benefits in going green:

    1. The Enviromental Bottom-Line: going green is good for the evniroment. By not pre-filling water glasses at each table during a three (3) days of lunches for 2,200 attendees; approximately 510 gallons of water can be saved.
    2. The Economic Bottom-Line: going green can save you green.  By utilizing technology for all communications, an event with 250 attendees can save you approximately $1,100 by using on-line registration, email evaluations and speaker handouts at the conclusion of the program.
    3. Social Responsibility
  •                          Definitions to help the process . . .

Climate Change (Global Warming) is mostly caused by the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere from human activity, primarily the burning of fossil fuels to provide the energy and services that we use every day.

Carbon Neutral means calculating your total climate damaging carbon emissions, reducing them where possible, then balancing your remaining emissions, often by purchasing a carbon offset. "Caron-neutral" implies that al greenhouse gas emissions are offset and is often used inaccurately to describe a company or project, when "low-carbon" is the more correct term.

Carbon Offsets allow individuals and businesses to reduce the CO2 emissions they are responsible for by reducing or displacing the CO2, in another place. Carbon offsets typically include renewable energy, energy efficiency, and reforestation projects.

Carbon Offset Projects usually fall into two (2) categories. Emission-reduction projects drive the adoption of new technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions; forestry projects absorb CO2 already in the atmosphere.

  • More eco-facts to consider when incorporating best green practices into your logistical planning:

    • For every ton of paper recycled, the following is saved: 7,000 gallons of water, 380 gallons of oil, and enough energy to power an average house for six (6) months.
    • You can run a TV for six (6) hours on the amount of electricity that is saved by recycling one (1) aluminum can.
    • By recycling one (1) glass bottle, you save enough electricity to power a 100-watt bulb for four (4) hours.
    • Glass produced from recycled glass instead of raw materials reduces related air pollution by 20% and water pollution by 50%.
